Washing machine broken? What to do

If your washing machine stops working, first check the power, the water supply, the drain filter and the door lock. It’s often something small. If that doesn’t help, decide between repair and a new machine, and until then, wash at the laundromat.

5 things you can check yourself

  1. Power: Is the plug in properly? Has a fuse or the residual current circuit breaker tripped?
  2. Water: Is the tap fully open? Is the inlet hose kinked?
  3. Door: Does the door click shut properly? No machine starts with the door open.
  4. Drain filter: If the machine won’t pump out, the filter is often blocked. Have a shallow container and towels ready before you open it.
  5. Error code: If the display shows a code, the user manual or the manufacturer’s website will help.

Important: if there’s water under the machine, a burning smell or sparks, unplug it immediately and stop using it.

Repair or replace?

A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about a third of a new machine and the old one is already many years old, buying a new one usually makes more sense. For younger machines, a repair is almost always worth it. Ask the technician about call-out and diagnosis fees beforehand.

In the meantime: wash at the laundromat

It often takes a few days until the technician comes or the new machine is delivered. In the meantime, you can wash at the laundromat, no appointment needed:

  • 8 kg for €5.00, large loads in the 18 kg XXL machine for €13.50
  • Dryers with a 20 kg drum, €1.50 per 10 minutes
  • Several machines at once: your whole pile of laundry done in just over an hour

You’ll find Wash&Go in Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg and Karlsruhe, open Monday to Saturday from 6 am: all locations.
