Is a laundromat worth it?

A laundromat is especially worth it if you live alone or as a couple, are short on space or don’t want to buy your own machine. At Wash&Go a load costs €5.00 (from €3.80 with the discount card), with no purchase, no repairs and no risk of water damage.

What does washing at the laundromat cost?

At Wash&Go you pay €5.00 for an 8 kg wash and €1.50 per 10 minutes of drying. A basket of laundry including 30 minutes in the dryer costs €9.50, or from €7.10 with the discount card. If you wash once a week, that’s roughly €30 to €40 a month, and less with the discount card.

And your own washing machine?

Your own machine looks cheaper per wash, because you only pay for electricity, water and detergent. But there are costs that are easy to forget:

  • the purchase price, and a replacement after a few years
  • repairs when the machine breaks down
  • a dryer, if you don’t want to use a clothes horse
  • space in the bathroom, kitchen or basement

If you wash a lot, for example as a family with children, your own machine usually works out cheaper. If you wash little, you save yourself the purchase and the hassle.

Who is the laundromat especially worth it for?

  • Students and flatshares without space or a connection for a machine
  • Singles and couples who only wash once or twice a week
  • Anyone with bulky items: duvets and sleeping bags fit in the 18 kg machine
  • When moving house or when your machine is broken as a quick stopgap

Time is money too

At the laundromat, washing and drying are done in 55 to 75 minutes, even for several loads side by side. At home a machine often runs for two hours, and then the laundry hangs on the clothes horse for a day.

Conclusion

A laundromat is worth it for anyone who washes little, doesn’t want a machine of their own or needs to wash large items. With the discount card it gets even cheaper. You’ll find all prices under laundromat prices.
